Do I need health insurance in Thailand “WHY” Edited – Cancer Medical Cost $31,000 V#138 Full Review
Hey, everyone throw on a joke here hope all is well how am I doing I’m doing a great thank I just returned back to Bangkok from Cambodia where I spent two nights in Cambodia just looking around looking at some of the rooms and the temples there had a great time I will be posting some videos on my trip to Cambodia within the next few days but this that’s not what this vlog is about [Music] and for those of you that do know keV in Thailand a fellow blogger and a friend of mine was just diagnosed with esophagus cancer and yeah, unfortunately, he did not have health coverage yet so I believe his cost was his uh chemo a million baht is what he said on his latest video that’s over thirty thousand dollars, of course, he said if he had health coverage health insurance he would not be paying all of that money.
He realized his that now first I want to give a shout out to Kevin Thailand he is in my thoughts and prayers and I wish him well and a speedy recovery he’s strong I actually sent him a message today he said he was going through chemo he doesn’t feel any nausea things are going well and yeah he’s looking forward to a full recovery and the good news is they caught this cancer at its very early stages so he will have a full recovery he’s a strong man but I also want to talk about a vlog that I paid back in August of 2018 this is just to provoke your thinking it’s not to encourage or discourage you to have health insurance that’s a personal choice that everyone has to make a decision everyone has to make I’m just sharing my story with you and I think this is a good time to post this vlog again under the circumstances of what just happened to one of our fellow of vloggers here in Thailand hey guys Joe here foreigner to be well what another hot day here in Italy 94 Fahrenheit and 34 Celsius I actually went to the gym early this morning and after I took a shower and got out hell I had to dry off three times and even after that when I got out to my car to back up my shirt was soaking wet so anyway today I’m using my Sony I don’t have my GoPro with me and so I’m kind of holding a camera but it’s okay because I’m a safe driver and if I want to get in an accident don’t worry I won’t put this vlog up so you’ll never know but anyway.
Freedom from Health Insurance
But I want to talk about today is health insurance and and why do I need it I’ve been watching a lot of chatter lately on on YouTube and some live streams about people and a difference of opinions about health insurance and since I’m going to Thailand I wanted to chime in on that so uh before you just stop watching this vlog no I’m not gonna try to convince you to get health insurance or to stop your health insurance coverage if you already you already have some all I’m gonna do is give you my um my thoughts on that you know try to provoke your thinking or only you know what’s right for you and what you would actually need so yeah Thailand is actually the world’s I believe it’s number three in a world for the um tourist destination for tourists to go seek medical care and with that the doctors are not increasing but the patients are definitely increasing from all over the world so supply with supply and demand those prices are also going up so but it is still a lot cheaper than definitely in the United States and in many other countries so that’s why a lot of people go there for for medical services but yeah you know I I be personally I do have health insurance and I do get to carry that with me when I retire and and it is good in Thailand actually it’s it’s recognized worldwide I have Blue Cross Blue Shield so yeah I’m going to keep it it cost me close to $400 a month but that’s okay.
I actually have my son on it when when he gets his own health coverage after college I would take him off and that’ll drop to about two hundred dollars a month but right now I’m paying $400 a month but yeah I am you know I’m 57 now I believe I’ve told everyone that but I’ve had two rotator cuff surgeries I had a hernia surgery I broke four vertebrae one time on my outer spine and also you know I got a stent at the age of 49 I had a stent put in now you know life is so unpredictable you know I you know when I am when and had to stand I go to the gym four days a week I do not smoke I drink occasionally but if I do drink it’s no more than two drinks a day and yeah I thought I was doing everything right you know health-wise so I wouldn’t have I didn’t think I’d have any problems at least till I got older but um unfortunately that’s not the case you know when you when when you people they wind up with a cancer and and talk trouble and heart disease and and all of that it has no age it really doesn’t you know people Bank it does and yes it’s true your risk factors go up the older you are but you could have medical crises at any age in your life and I’ve realized that especially when I was a 49 now some people would they do is they put an emergency font on the side is what I hear they save money in AOL for to plan for that emergency in the future and that’s great the problem is is once you have a condition let’s just say you have a heart condition or you have cancer and let’s use cancer.
for example, you have your chemo you go through your therapy which could be even in Asia and Thailand could be a god-awful amount of money fifty sixty thousand dollars I’m not sure what the price is in Asia but I know in the United States it’s very expensive and even if you go into remission that doesn’t mean it won’t come back so what do you do after after you paid for it out of that emergency finding you had then you’re going to try to get health insurance well since you have a pre-existing condition chances are there’s not going to be an insurance company that wants to uh provide you health insurance especially if you have heart disease or if you have you had cancer or anything like that and if they do it’ll probably be unaffordable to two to get that and that’s anywhere they look at your age they look look at your risk factors they look at you smoke do you drink whatever they’re looking at all of that and any pre-existing condition so once you have a pre-existing condition it’s really hard to you to I get health insurance and that’s a known fact all over and the older you get the older you get if you want to wait till you’re 56 years 60 years old to get health insurance those premiums they’re gonna be much much higher than had you gotten it when you were in your thirties or early 40s and continue to keep that coverage but the biggest risk is of course you know that emergency fund will may be good for one time depending on the medical emergency – medical situation.
But after that you’re going to want to get health coverage and that’s what you’re gonna run into your your problems obviously again I’m just you know just trying to provoke your thinking a lot of people don’t think about that pre pre-existing condition and or you know what if I do have cancer what if I do what if the money I saved is not enough you know I know a lot of us think it you know while I’m healthy and you know I pay such high premiums or I pay these premiums for health care and I’m not using it I feel like I’m throwing money away well the unfortunate thing is we all get older and we all have wind up with some type of health condition and even at a young age some of us wind up in our thirties forties or even younger that than that with cancer or heart conditions or some other serious some medical condition that that um need to definitely be taken care of and in Thailand it’s money first and and healthcare then unless you have health insurance of course then if there’s a guaranteed payment they’ll um they’ll they’ll definitely provide you the services you need to being well on your way to being better but yeah if you don’t have it then you’re in trouble and even if you do have it you have to ask yourself that question is that a one-time cost and will my situation will my health condition go away or will I have further complications from the health condition.
I had so yeah just things to think about yeah and I just want again I just wanted to UM provoke your thinking on do you need health care do you not need health care what works best for you what works best for me I know had I not had health care before the age of 50 I probably would have been paying $200,000 out-of-pocket and in some cases that’s most people’s life savings so anyway do me a favor let me know what you think put comments in my comment section and yeah if you like this vlog if you’re not a subscriber please do subscribe to those folks that have subscribed and have subscribed most recently thank you so much for subscribing to my channel I truly truly do appreciate it and yeah as always and until next time stay safe stay happy and stay tuned we’ll talk to you then my camera go up again so yeah please share this vlog I think a lot of people would benefit from it and until next time stay safe stay happy stay tuned bye
